Teaching Trust

Want your kids to be world-changers?
Teach them trust and obedience.
While I am no gardener, I liken the parenting journey to that of a plant. A plant needs soil in which to grow, and for us, as faith-filled people, our soil is DELIGHT in the Lord. Absence of soil is absence of a plant. Lack of delight equals no powerful, long-lasting spiritual journey.
If delight is the soil, then trust is the roots that are foundational to anything else we do. The roots depend on the soil- therefore trust is dependent upon delight in the Lord. Trust, the roots, must unify to the soil of delight in order to have growth and eventually bear fruit. Trust determines the foundation of our child’s spiritual formation and how tall they’ll eventually grow in Him.
To say trust is foundational is an understatement. Trust is the process by which our hearts are unified first to the Heavenly Father. When we teach our children to trust God no matter what our circumstances may look like, we are allowing them to tangibly and in many ways, logically, experience His goodness. We delight in Him, so therefore we trust in Him. The unification of these two elements lay the foundation and are vital to our child’s spiritual formation. Do we always understand Him? Absolutely not. Are we always going to see Him clearly? Once again, hard no. But delight and trust allows our heart to be still and know that He is God and He is working all things together for our good.
How do we develop trust in our children? Make these verses a part of your home life. Say them over and over to get in your head...so that they can eventually be in your heart.
Proverbs 3:5-6
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."
Jeremiah 17:7-8
"But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit."
Psalm 56:4
"In God, whose word I praise — in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?"
Psalm 28:7
"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and he helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise him."
Isaiah 26:3
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
Isaiah 43:2
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze."
2 Corinthians 5:7
"For we live by faith, not by sight."
James 1:12
"Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."
